Second Game Suspended Due To Rain After Falcons Fall In First Game

CARY, NC (April 3) – On Monday, Saint Augustine’s University’s Marquis Johnson (Sr./Richmond, Va.) hurled a no-hitter in the second game of a CIAA baseball doubleheader against Chowan University that was suspended in the ninth inning due to rain at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Falcons lost the first game 6-0.

A Preseason All-CIAA selection, Johnson held the Hawks hitless through eight innings and faced one batter in the top of the ninth before leaving the game with the score tied 1-1. After Johnson left, the Hawks scored three runs in their half of the ninth to lead 4-1.

The Falcons were threatening in the bottom of the ninth before the game was stopped. Both Collin Pippin (Fr./Garner, NC) and Timothy Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) were walked and they advanced on a wild pitch, leaving men on second and third base with no outs. That’s where the game will resume at a later undetermined date.

The no-hitter is the first in Johnson’s baseball career at Saint Augustine’s University. It was his first pitching appearance in two weeks due to injury.

Johnson’s no-hitter was the second of two on Monday. In the first game, Zack Cooper of Chowan fired a no-hitter to top the Falcons. His no-hitter overshadowed a strong pitching performance by Chris Ingram (Sr./Smithtown, NY) of the Falcons who scattered five hits and gave up only two earned runs in 6.1 innings.

Ingram kept the Falcons in the game as they only trailed 2-0 heading into the seventh inning. But the Hawks scored four runs in the seventh to secure the win.

The Falcons dropped to 3-4 in the CIAA and 14-22 overall. The Hawks, who are the defending CIAA champions, improved to 6-3 in the CIAA and 15-19 overall.

The Falcons will play again Tuesday, April 4 against Francis Marion University in a single nine-inning contest at Cormell Field in Florence, S.C. Game time is 3 p.m.
