Several Student-Athletes Key Falcons Victory
 

RALEIGH, NC – On Sunday, Saint Augustine’s University relied on timely hitting and strong pitching to trip Salem International 7-2 in the first game of a baseball doubleheader at Optimist Park. The Falcons lost the second game 4-2. 

Johnathan Sierra (Sr./Raleigh, NC) batted 3-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored and Hector Pichardo (So./Dominican Republic) batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Falcons, who had eight hits in the first game. Alexis Garcia (Sr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) scored twice in the contest. 

The pitching trio of Amilcar Yanez (So./Venezuela), Collin Pippin (Fr./Garner, NC) and Chris Ingram (Sr./Smithfield, NY) combined on a six-hitter in seven innings with Yanez picking up the win in his first start. Yanez tossed a three-hit shutout in five innings. 

The Tigers scored two runs in the sixth when Pippen pitched but both were unearned. Ingram gained the save in the final inning. 

The Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Tim Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) scored when the Tigers walked Pichardo with the bases loaded. Alexis Garcia and Sierra both scored when Ruben Pinero (R-Jr./Bronx, NY) and Kilvio Garcia (SO./Bronx, NY) were hit by pitches on consecutive at-bats. 

The lead stretched to 5-0 in the third inning when Pinero scored on a single by Michael Keels (R-Sr./Manning, SC) and Tyquan Bryant (So./Henderson, NC) scored on a sacrifice fly by Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC). Bryant reached base on a double. 

The Tigers closed the gap to 5-2 in the top of the sixth but the Falcons responded with two runs in the same inning. Sierra scored Alexis Garcia on a triple and later scored on Pichardo’s single for the final margin. 

In the second game, the Falcons led 1-0 in the second inning when Charles Lyons (So./Rockingham, NC) scored Pinero on a sacrifice fly. The Tigers moved ahead 2-1 in the third with a home run and bases-loaded walk. 

The Tigers (3-15 overall) added another run in the sixth but the Falcons scored in the same inning when Pinero drove in Kilvio Garcia on a single. The Tigers scored a run in the seventh for the final score. 

Pinero batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored for the Falcons, who totaled five hits. The Tigers finished with seven hits as Matthew Flores and Donato Gallano both batted 2-for-4 with each getting a double. Flores recorded an RBI and Gallano scored a run. Jimmy Cramer was 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored for the Tigers in the first game. 

The Falcons (8-12 overall) will host Paine College at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. on Wednesday, March 8. Game times are 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
