ATLANTA – David White, Jr. of Benedict was named the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Player of the Year and Spring Hill’s Hunter Romero was selected as the Freshman of the Year, announced Wednesday by the league office.

All-conference honors are voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

Matthew “Ty” Roberts of Miles was selected as the Coach of the Year. Roberts led the Golden Bears (27-18 overall, 15-5 SIAC) to the SIAC regular season title along with the west division title. The Golden Bears earned the top seed in the west and will face fourth-seeded Claflin (15-31, 9-11) out of the east division on Thursday, May 4 at noon.

White, a junior first baseman from Columbia, S.C. ranks third in the SIAC in batting (.426) and slugging percentage (.750). In conference games White leads the league in runs scored (31), hits (39), doubles (10), and total bases (67). He is second in RBIs (32) and is tied for second in home runs with six. He also ranks 14th in Division II in batting and is 12th nationally in doubles per game. No. 2 Benedict (25-14, 14-7) and No. 3 Tuskegee (23-24, 8-13) open the 2017 SIAC Baseball Championship on Thursday at 9 a.m.

Romero, a freshman first baseman from Covington, La. hit .336 during the regular season in 35 games with 34 RBI, 19 runs, 4 doubles, three homers, and a triple. During league games, he hit .406 and recorded 28 hits. The rookie finished the season with a .981 fielding percentage.

Cameron Starks of Kentucky State was named the Utility Player of the Year. Starks hit .418 in 19 games against SIAC opponents while splitting time between left field and first base. He tallied a .944 fielding percentage on the year. Kentucky State (17-31, 12-9) was seeded second in the west division and will play No. 3 Paine (20-20, 12-8) out of the east on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Spring Hill’s Sean Bretz was named Starting Pitcher of the Year. Bretz, a freshman from River Ridge, La. built a 7-1 overall record with one save and a 1.76 ERA in 15 appearances with nine starts as a true freshman. He finished the season with 70 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched. In conference games, he was 6-0 with one shutout and 40 strikeouts.

Elijah McKinnis of Claflin was voted Relief Pitcher of the Year.  The junior from Chicago, Ill. is tied for first in the SIAC in saves with two. He finished with 18 strikeouts in conference games. McKinnis also recorded a season-high eight strikeouts in a win over Morehouse College this season.

Albany State (17-28, 15-6) the 2017 SIAC east division champion and No. 1 seed in the east will take on No. 4 LeMoyne-Owen out of the west division on Thursday at 6 p.m.
