SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State made four errors but hung on to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson 10-9, in a game played at Tiger Field.

The victory gives SSU a 3-0 record as they complete the three-game sweep of the Knights.

The game was a slug fest with the Tigers getting 13 hits and FDU collecting 12.

Both squads scored twice in the first inning. Matt McCann and Owen Vonesslinger scored for Fairleigh Dickinson on  sacrifice flies, for a 2-0 lead.Kyle Gerdts singled for SSU and scored on a single by Turner Davis. A flyout by Khayld Cox allowed Davis to score and tie the game.

The Tigers added runs in the next three innings to move ahead 8-2.

Hector Benitez doubled in the second inning and came home on a single by Gerdts for a 3-2 lead.

Davis, Bryce Luken and Jorge Lopez led off the bottom of  the third inning with singles to load the bases. Davis and Luken scored on a double by Cox., Lopez scored on a sacrifice fly by Larry Silmon and Cox crossed home plate when Marcus Mitchell reached on an error by the third baseman to increase their lead to 7-2.

Davis hit a solo home run, the first of his college career, to give the Tigers a six-run cushion.

The Knights cut into the Savannah State lead with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh, Lopez led off with a single while was followed by Jalen Atterbury reaching base on a walk. Lopez scored on a single by Jakeel Daniels while Atterbury crossed home plate after a throwing error by the first baseman on that same play.

Those two runs gave SSU a 10-7 lead.

Bobby Romano hit a two run home run for Fairleigh Dickinson in the top of the eighth for the final runs of the game.

Cox drove in three runs to pace the Tigers offense. Davis drove in two runs while getting three hits and scoring three times. Lopez had three hits and scored twice while Gerdts collected a pair of hits.

Alec Kliphouse started on the mound for SSU and pitched 4.2 innings to earn the win. Charles Wilson struck out four batters in 2.1 innings while Paul Sheffield, who earned the save, pitched two innings.

Vonesslinger had three hits and scored three times for FDU (0-3). James Sharkey took the loss on the mound, giving up three runs in one and two-thirds inning.
