Falcons Hurler Strikes Out 11 in 4-1 Victory

RALEIGH, NC – On Saturday, Ricky Rice (R-Sr./Union, SC) fired a one-hitter as Saint Augustine’s University toppled Salem International University 4-1 in the second game of a baseball doubleheader at Optimist Park. The Falcons bounced back nicely after losing the first game 7-6.

Rice recorded 11 strikeouts and two walks in seven complete innings for the pitching victory. He hurled a no-hitter through five innings.

While Rice stymied the Tigers, the Falcons sizzled offensively with nine hits. Tim Carter (Sr./Lumberton, NC) led the Falcons at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a triple and one run scored. His two-run single in the fourth inning scored Hector Pichardo (So./Dominican Republic) and Ruben Pinero (R-Jr./Bronx, NY) for a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers (2-14 overall) scratched out a run in the sixth, but that was all they could muster against Rice, who tied teammates Marquis Johnson (Jr./Richmond, VA) and Ali Nunn (Fr./Raleigh, NC) for the CIAA lead in pitching victories (2). Rice is the CIAA leader in strikeouts this season (32).

Carter opened the scoring for the Falcons (7-11 overall) in the third inning with a triple which scored Michael Keels (R-Sr./Manning, SC). He later scored in the same inning on a single by Alexis Garcia (Sr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) for a 2-0 lead.

In the first game, the Falcons erupted for four runs in the fifth inning to rally from a two-run deficit, but the Tigers scored three runs in the seventh for the victory. The Falcons had runners on second base and third base with two outs, but a fly ball to right field ended the contest.

Keels was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored for the Falcons, who totaled six hits. Carter and Alexis Garcia both added an RBI in the contest.

Alexis Garcia drove in Keels with an RBI groundout in the first inning to tie the score 1-1, but the Tigers scored twice in the second for a 3-1 lead. Keels sliced the margin to one in the third when he scored from second base on two errors.

The Tigers added a run in the fourth for a 4-2 lead, but the Falcons took the lead with four runs in the fifth. Carson Davis (So./Oakboro, NC) started the rally by scoring on a passed ball and Pinero scored on an infield error. Carter knocked in Kilvio Garcia (So./Bronx, NY) with a single for a 5-4 lead and Corey Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) scored on a balk for a two-run Falcons lead. The Falcons held the lead until the top of the seventh when the Tigers scored three runs.

The Falcons and Tigers play two more games Sunday, March 5 at Optimist Park beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the doubleheader.
