Prairie View Panthers Take Sunday Win Over UAPB

Cody Den Beste and Avery Williams each homered to support the complete game effort on the mound by Edgar Sanchez as Prairie View A&M baseball defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 8-3 Sunday at Tankersley Field.

Den Beste, Avery Williams, Anthony Fernandez, and Carson Lee each had three hits for the Panthers (8-21 overall, 4-5 SWAC), with Den Beste driving in a season-high four runs.

Sanchez (1-4) earned his first win of the season, allowing eight hits and three runs while walking two and striking out three. He threw 127 pitches, 87 for strikes, and threw 29 first-pitch strikes to the 37 hitters he faced.

Trailing 2-1 in the third, Williams singled through the left side with one out, and Anthony Fernandez singled to left field. Den Beste then launched a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall for his second home run of the season to give Prairie View A&M the lead for good, 4-2.

After UAPB (6-16, 5-4) cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth, the Panthers broke it open with a four-run sixth. Steven Williams reached on an error before Carson Lee singled up the middle. Following a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Macais, Kaylor Lewis singled up the middle to score Steven Williams. Brashad Jones‘ RBI groundout scored Lee, and then Avery Williams‘ two-run homer to left field, his second of the season, on the first pitch of the at-bat ended the scoring.

The Panthers return to action Tuesday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at home against Huston-Tillotson, with a live video stream on
