Prairie View Offense Comes Alive In Baseball Win At Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. – Season highs in runs and hits powered the Prairie View A&M University baseball team to a 14-6 win Saturday over Southern at Lee-Hines Field.

The Panthers (5-18 overall, 2-3 SWAC) totaled 16 hits and did their all their scoring in only three innings in posting their first win at Southern since 2015.

Cody Den Beste, Tyrone Thomas, and Kevin Macais each had three hits on the day. Den Beste had two of the Panthers three extra base hits, recording a double and a triple while driving in two runs and scoring a run. Thomas scored twice on the day, and Macias and Steven Williams each scored three runs, with Macais also driving in two runs.

Trailing 1-0 after one inning, PVAMU posted a five-run second inning. Thomas led off with a single to right center field, before Carson Lee singled to center, moving Thomas to second. Steven Williams then reached first on a thrown error and advanced all the way to third as Thomas and Lee scored. Macias then singled to left field, scoring Williams. With one out, Corbin Jamison tripled to score Macais. With two outs, Den Beste struck out swinging but advanced to first on a throwing error, allowing Jamison to score for a 5-1 lead.

After a three-run eighth extended the lead to 8-4, a six-run ninth broke the game wide open. Thomas, Lee, Williams and Macais led off the inning with singles, with the latter two hits driving in runs. With one out, Avery Williams‘ sac fly scored Steven Williams with the third PVAMU run of the inning. Jefferson walked before Den Beste doubled to left center, scoring Macais and Jefferson. Nathan Carter‘s single to center scored Den Beste.

Darrien Williams (2-1) earned the win on the mound, hurling seven innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, with four walks and two strikeouts.

The third game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
