Prairie View Jalyn Baker’s Three-Run Homer Lifts Panthers To Walkoff Win

Jalyn Baker‘s three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Prairie View A&M University baseball team to a 15-13 win Friday over Southern at Tankersley Field.

Baker, who set career highs in hits (four) and RBI (five), hit a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to complete the rally in the final at bat, all with two outs. Nathan Carter singled to right field, and then Kevin Macias singled to left before Baker’s dramatic heroics touched off the celebration on the infield.

The teams combined for 28 runs and 36 hits in the nearly four-hour contest as at least one run was scored in every inning and in 15 of the 18 half-innings.

Macias (three runs scored), Avery Williams (three runs scored) and Steven Williams each had three hits as the Panthers (14-27, 7-9) set season highs for runs and hits (21). Carter, Cody Den Beste, and Carson Lee each had two hits in the contest. Jordan Foster (1-0), the sixth PVAMU pitcher, earned the win in relief.

Trailing 4-0, the Panthers scored five in the second. Lee doubled to right field, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. S Williams then doubled to right center, scoring Lee. S. Williams then scored on an error to cut the deficit to 4-2. Carter then singled to left before back-to-back walks to Macias and Baker loaded the bases. Corbin Jamison doubled to center field, scoring Macias and Baker to tie the score at 4-4. A. Williams’ sac fly to center scored Baker for give PVAMU a 5-4 lead.

Trailing 6-5 in the fourth, Prairie View A&M regained the lead. A. Williams singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Lee singled to left field, advancing A. Williams to second. With two outs, Tyrone Thomas singled to right field, scoring A. Williams. Carter then reached on a throwing error, scoring Lee to give the Panthers a 7-6 lead.

In the fifth, Den Beste’s single to right scored A. Williams, who doubled with two outs to extend the PVAMU lead to 8-6.

The teams matched runs over the final four innings, with Prairie View A&M and Southern (12-21, 7-11) each scoring one run in the sixth, two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and three in the ninth.
