NEW ORLEANS, La. – The sound of baseball is in the air as the 2019 college baseball season is underway and the Prairie View A&M baseball team has picked up the first win of the season, as they topped the Alcorn State Braves 10-3 with the help of solid pitching and production from the middle and bottom of the batting order.

Although left handed red-shirt sophomore Tracy Warren opened the game on the mound for the Panthers, allowing two hits, three runs and recorded five strikeouts, it was junior right-handed pitcher Taylor Laux that was lights-out in his first action of play in almost a calendar year.  Laux pitched only 4.0 innings not allowing any hits and no runs in the 13 batters he faced.  Laux struck out three batters and walked only one to get the win.

PVAMU’s offense was led by senior third baseman Daniel Lingua, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.  Newcomers, junior catcher Dalton Horner also went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while freshman second baseman Alex Martinez was 2-for-5 with one hit and two RBI.  Although junior left fielder Xavier Jefferson went 1-for-1 from the plate, he was walked three times, but crossed the plate four times.

The Braves struck first in the opening frame to take a 2-0 advantage, the Panthers bounced back in the second inning earning the first run off of a Horner single to left field scoring Jefferson, who reached base after being hit by pitch to make the score 2-1.

Alcorn added a third run in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.  Once again in the bottom of the fourth frame the Panthers earned a second run on a sac fly by sophomore center fielder Damarie Smith that scored Jefferson.

PVAMU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, starting with a triple to left field by Martinez.  Junior centerfielder Avery Williamsexecuted a sac fly that scored Martinez to knot the game 3-3.

Horner led off the fifth inning with a single to center field, before stealing second, both Smith and Lingua were walked loading the bases.  Martinez singled to left field scoring both Horner and Smith advancing the score 5-3.

The seventh inning was a four run scoring frenzy for the Panthers as they took a 9-3 lead.  After a pitcher change Jefferson led off with a double to left field and advancing to third on a wild pitch.  Freshman first baseman Mark Kirkland doubled to left field scoring Jefferson, before Horner reached base on a hit by pitch.  Junior second baseman Andrew Garcia singled to right field, scoring Kirkland and advancing Horner to second.  Horner then advance to third on a ground ball, with Garcia moving to second.  Lingua doubled deep down the third baseline scoring both Horner and Garcia to end the scoring frenzy.

A final run in the bottom of the eighth sealed the win for the Panthers.  Jefferson led the team off with a free base to first after another pitching change.  He later advanced to second on a pass ball, before Horner reached base on a throwing error that would score Jefferson to take the 10-3 win.

The Panthers will continue play at the Andre Dawson Classic on Saturday at 7 p.m. central.  The three game weekend will conclude on Sunday at 11 a.m. when PVAMU faces Eastern Kentucky.
