HUNTSVILLE – JanMikell arrived at Alabama A&M this past fall as a young baseball prospect surrounded by high expectations.

Even though Bastardo has yet to make his collegiate debut, the hype already is growing.

When Perfect Game USA released its Southwestern Athletic Conference preseason preview, Bastardo was tabbed as the league’s Preseason Freshman of the Year.

Perfect Game USA picked Alabama A&M to finish third in the SWAC’s Eastern Division, behind Alabama State and Jackson State, respectively.

Bastardo, a 6-foot-3 and 205-pound outfielder from Fort Myers, Fla., already has caught the attention of his new Alabama A&M teammates.

“At practice, JanMikell already has shown his potential as a hitter,” Alabama A&M right-handed pitcher Michael Hovermill said. “The guy has some pop. We definitely are glad he’s on our team.”

Bastardo highlights a large and talented freshman class signed by second-year Alabama A&M baseball coach Manny Lora. When Alabama A&M opens the season next month, the Bulldogs will have 17 freshman of the roster.

Alabama A&M opens the season on Feb. 14 at Bethune-Cookman. The Bulldogs host North Alabama on Feb. 18 for the team’s home opener.
