DURHAM, N.C.  The new school year has begun at North Carolina Central University, and that means an end to the various collegiate summer baseball leagues around the country where a few Eagles competed.

Christian Gonnelli and Landon Fraley pitched for the Hamilton Joes in the Great Lakes League, Michell McCrary and Conrad Kovalcik spent the summer with the Rockville Express in the Cal Ripken League, and Devin Sweettook the mound for the Asheboro Copperheads in the Coastal Plains League.

Gonnelli and Fraley won a championship with the Hamilton Joes as they finished tied for first in their division with a 27-15 record and won the championship series in a pivotal game five.  Gonnelli finished 1-0 over four starts, and struck out 10 batters over 21 complete innings.  Fraley made 10 appearances in relief and pitched 18.1 innings with 16 strikeouts.

McCrary and Kovalcik played their regular positions of outfield and catcher, respectively, for the Rockville Express and had solid seasons at the plate.  McCrary batted .275 with four runs scored, and Kovalcik hit .238 with seven doubles, two triples and a home run.

Sweet helped pitch the Asheboro Copperheads to a first-half division championship, and was also named to the All-CPL Second Team.  He went 4-1 on the mound over seven starts and nine appearances.  Sweet finished with an ERA of 3.43, one of the lowest among starters on the club, and struck out a team second-most 51 batters over 39.1 innings.
