NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University freshman Ryan Miller (Blandon, Pa.) spun a gem in his inaugural collegiate start against Canisius, and he’s been rewarded by being named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday, Feb. 18.

Miller took the mound in the series finale against the Golden Griffins on Sunday, Feb. 17 and turned in five innings with 11 strikeouts and just two hits and two walks in a rain-shortened 9-0 shutout to clinch the series.  In that start, Miller became the first freshman to throw 10 or more strikeouts in a game since Alex Weathersby against Moorehouse on Feb. 18, 2007.

This is Miller’s first career weekly award, and the first of the year for the Eagle program.  NCCU will take the diamond again on Tuesday, Feb. 19 against Norfolk State at 2:00 p.m. at the Durham Athletic Park, and admission is free.
