NORFOLK, Va. – After being named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year following the 2018 season, North Carolina Central University junior Corey Joyce (Lexington, N.C.) has been named MEAC Preseason Player of the Year as voted by league coaches and sports information directors, the MEAC office announced on Thursday, February 7.

Joyce is joined by junior Carter Williams (Brown Summit, N.C.) on the MEAC Preseason First Team, and junior Timmy Fischvogt (Kernersville, N.C.) was named to the Second Team.

Joyce has had a strong career as an Eagle, and became the first player in the modern era of the program to be named MEAC Player of the Year after he finished second in the league in batting (.358) and slugging (.542), and finished top-20 in the nation in stolen bases with 27.  He broke the school record for doubles with 15, and also finished top-10 in the league with six home runs and 37 RBI.

Williams was a postseason Third Team All-MEAC selection in 2018 after racking up 13 doubles, five triples, and six home runs from the leadoff spot for a .521 slugging percentage, which ranked top-five in the league.  He became the first Eagle to collect 100 total bases to finish second in the league in that category, and touched home 41 times with 59 hits.

Fischvogt operated as the primary catcher for the Eagles in 2018, as he appeared in 43 games and started 34 of 52.  He knocked 27 hits with three doubles and two homers to drive in 19 RBI with 36 total bases.  Fischvogt finished top-10 in the MEAC with a .982 fielding percentage behind the plate as well.  He also joined a select club against Iona on March 2 as he became just the fifth player to pick up five hits in a game, as he went 5-for-5 with four runs and three RBI.

The Eagles as a team were voted to finish fourth in the Southern Division, and North Carolina A&T was voted to win the division as the reigning league champions.

NCCU will open the 2019 campaign at home with a weekend series against Canisius at the Durham Athletic Park that will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15.
