NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State’s Alsander Womack was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Womack, a sophomore, was a tough out for opponents last week. Womack hit .667 (12-for-18) with 11 runs batted in as the Spartans went 3-1. Womack had at least two hits and two RBIs in all four games, and posted at least three hits in each of NSU’s three wins over Maryland Eastern Shore in a weekend conference sweep.

Womack went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a loss at Virginia before going 10-for-14 in the Spartans’ high-scoring sweep of MDES. Womack was 4-for-5 with two RBIs in the first game against Eastern Shore, then was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, a double and two runs scored in the second game. Womack capped off the weekend with a 3-for-4 effort, including a double and three more RBIs in the series finale. He did not strike out during the week.

Following his torrid week, Womack now leads the nation with a Division I-best .463 batting average. He also ranks fourth nationally in hits per game (1.8), ninth in toughest to strike out (1 in 15.8 at bats) and 12th in on-base percentage (.528). Despite missing six games earlier in the year, Womack not only leads the MEAC in batting and on-base percentage, but is tied for second in total hits, sixth in RBIs (25) and ninth in total bases (55).

This is Womack’s second MEAC Player of the Week award this year. He currently owns a 19-game hitting streak and has at least one hit in 23 of the 24 games in which he has played.

The Spartans, who scored 56 runs in the weekend sweep of MDES, are 14-18 overall and 10-5 in the MEAC North entering a home weekend series coming up against first-place Coppin State (11-4 MEAC).
