NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State University senior outfielder Justin Hayes has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of finalists follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

A native of Chesapeake, Virginia, Hayes has a 3.3 GPA and is a business management major. A member of the 2018 All-MEAC first team and 2018 ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region second team, Hayes has also garnered several academic honors. He was a 2018 MEAC All-Academic Team member, a member of NSU’s Dean’s List, and has been on the NSU Athletics Director’s Honor Roll for all five semesters he has attended NSU since transferring from Old Dominion.

Hayes is the 2019 captain of the Spartan baseball team. He is also very active both on campus and in the local community, having participated in the Portsmouth Baptist Association’s In-As-Much, collecting money to help local homeless citizens with laundry needs. In addition, he has helped collect clothing and toiletries for the Children’s Mission Day with the Portsmouth Department of Social Services, and has also volunteered with other community service initiatives through his high school and church.

This year, Hayes is batting .252 with 17 stolen bases (tied for first in the MEAC), 22 runs scored and 11 RBIs through 27 games played. He hit .347 with 28 steals last season, his first as a Spartan.

Finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 candidates announced in March. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website through June 10. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner. This year’s Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 College World Series® in June. For more information on all of the finalists, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
