NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State outfielder Caleb Ward was named Thursday to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ® Division I Baseball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, the organization announced.
Ward, who just completed his redshirt junior season, was voted to the All-America third team. A native of Hampton, Virginia, Ward carries a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and is majoring in mass communication. Earlier this year, he was named the 2018-19 NSU Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.
To qualify for the Google Cloud Academic All-America Team, student-athletes must have attended their respective schools for at least one year and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 in addition to making a significant impact on their teams.
Ward also had a highly successful year on the diamond for the Spartans. A transfer from the University of Richmond, Ward was a second-team All-MEAC selection in 2019, his first season in the green and gold. He batted .290 with five home runs (tied for the team lead) and 44 runs batted in, tops on the team and second in the MEAC. He also hit 12 doubles and two triples and stole 13 bases.
Ward was also named to the MEAC All-Tournament Team after leading NSU to a runner-up finish.
Ward is NSU’s second academic All-American in baseball in the last three seasons. Current NSU assistant coach Brian Beard was a second-team selection following his senior season in 2017. This also makes the third straight year that the University has boasted an academic All-American. Softball player Seana Moriarty was also a second-team selection last year.
Ward was the only MEAC player and one of just two from state institutions to make the list.
