Norfolk State Baseball: Spartans Sweep Weekly MEAC Awards

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State baseball players Angel Rosario, Matt Outman and Alex Mauricio swept the weekly MEAC baseball honors as announced by the conference office on Monday. Rosario was named MEAC Player of the Week, Outman was tabbed Pitcher of the Week and Mauricio was selected Rookie of the Week.

Angel RosarioRosario, a junior outfielder, batted 6-for-15 with a home run and five runs batted in to lead the Spartans to a 3-1 week. Last Tuesday, Rosario hit a solo home run in NSU’s first win over VCU since 1977. He followed that up with a career high four hits in five at-bats in an 8-0 win over Jackson State on Thursday. Rosario also had an RBI in game three of the JSU series as the Spartans took two of three from their SWAC opponent.

 

 

 

 

 

Matt OutmanOutman, a junior lefty, earned his third Pitcher of the Week honor of the year by pitching seven scoreless innings against JSU last Thursday. The Tigers entered the weekend as one of the nation’s top 15 hitting teams, but were shut out by Outman and reliever Cooper Jones. Outman allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out three to earn his eighth win of the season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Norfolk State head shotsMauricio, a freshman shortstop, batted 5-for-12 and scored four runs in NSU’s four games last week to pick up his third weekly MEAC rookie award of the season. Mauricio had three hits, including the go-ahead RBI single, in the win over VCU.

This is the second time NSU has swept the weekly MEAC baseball honors, after also having done so on April 13. Spartan players have earned 15 weekly conference accolades this season.
