NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State sophomore outfielder Syeed Mahdi was selected as MEAC Baseball Co-Player of the Week and freshman Chase Anderson was chosen Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

34 Syeed Mahdi 2016 HSMahdi batted .350 with three home runs and nine RBI in leading the Spartans to a 3-1 week against North Carolina Central and Towson. Mahdi went 7-for-20 with all seven hits going for extra bases. He doubled four times during the week and homered in three of NSU’s four games.

Mahdi went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a career-high four RBI and the go-ahead three-run homer in Friday’s 12-7 victory over Towson. He then hit the go-ahead RBI double and added another three-run homer in Sunday’s series-clinching 13-7 win over Towson, matching his career best with another four-RBI game. Mahdi also hit a solo homer last Wednesday in the win at NCCU.

Through 15 games this season, Mahdi is batting .355 with a MEAC-leading eight doubles, four home runs (tied for second in the MEAC) and 17 runs batted in. His .677 slugging percentage is second in the conference. This is the first career MEAC Player of the Week honor for Mahdi, who shared the award this week with Florida A&M’s Dylan Dillard.

5 Chase Anderson 2016 HS (1)Anderson earned pitching wins in relief against NCCU and in the first game with Towson. Against Towson, Anderson allowed one run in two innings of work and struck out four batters. In three relief appearances for the week, Anderson was 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA. He now leads the MEAC with three pitching victories this season, boasting a 3-1 record with a 4.38 ERA.

This is Anderson’s second straight MEAC Rookie of the Week award and the third in a row for the Spartans. Utility player Kevin Granger earned the award two weeks ago.
