Norfolk State Baseball Adds Ten Newcomers to Program for 2019-2020

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State baseball head coach Keith Shumate announced Thursday the addition of 10 new players who have joined the program for the 2019-20 season.

The newcomers include four high school prospects and six who are transferring from other institutions.

“I believe the incoming class will provide the support our team needs to contend for a conference championship,” Shumate said. “Having quality depth is essential and should pay dividends for us.”

Here is more on each new recruit:

LHP Dalton Barham (Norfolk, Va./Maury HS)
Barham tallied a 5-1 record with a 1.16 ERA as a senior at nearby Maury High School. He was rated a top 1000 player nationally by the recruiting Perfect Game.

RHP Josue Cumba (Dumfries, Va./Potomac Senior HS)
Cumba logged a 4-0 record and 0.56 ERA as a senior. He also batted .298 and was a first-team all-conference infielder at Potomac.

IF Julian Cumba (Dumfries, Va./Potomac Senior HS)
Julian, twin brother of Josue, was also a standout at Potomac. He was a four-year letterwinner in both basketball and baseball, and earned second-team all-state honors at third base as a junior.

OF/RHP Dylan Flint (Manassas, Va./Patrick Henry CC)
Flint batted .355 with four triples, four home runs and 27 RBIs in 36 games as a sophomore at Patrick Henry. Flint was a first-team All-Region X selection.

RHP/Util. Danny Hosley (Vienna, Va./Patrick Henry CC)
On the mound, Hosley was 6-1 with a 2.99 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 72.1 innings pitched for PHCC last year. He also batted .354 and earned All-Region X defensive team honors. Hosley was Liberty District Player of the Year as a senior at Langley High School.

RHP Michael Portela (Chesapeake, Va./Paul D. Camp CC)
Portela, who redshirted the 2019 season, was 1-2 with a 4.14 ERA in 63 innings pitched in 2018 at Paul D. Camp. A Hickory High grad, he pitched three complete games, struck out 49 and allowed just 52 hits.

RHP Jackson Sanchez (Virginia Beach, Va./Bryant & Stratton College)
Sanchez spent two seasons at Bryant & Stratton College following his prep career at Green Run HS. As a sophomore, he made 15 appearances (three starts) and struck out 46 batters in 32.1 innings pitched.

IF Rhay Street (Matteson, Ill./Rich Central HS)
Street was the 2019 Southland Conference Player of the Year and first-team all-conference second baseman. He batted .476 with 18 doubles, seven triples and one home run as a senior.

OF Juwuan Weaver (Virginia Beach, Va./Potomac State College)
Weaver, who played prep ball at Tallwood High, spent the last two seasons at Potomac State (W.Va.) College. He hit .264 as a sophomore and earned All-Region XX Tournament honors. He batted .317 with four homers as a freshman in 2018.

RHP Alex Wright (Circleville, Ohio/Savannah State)
Wright, who will be a graduate student at NSU, attended SSU from 2016-19 but redshirted the ’19 season. He was a member of the weekend rotation at SSU previously, making 10 starts and striking out 66 in 52.1 innings pitch in 2018.

The Spartans have 28 players returning from last year’s team that went 24-26 overall and 17-7 in MEAC North play en route to its fourth division title in five years and a runner-up finish at the MEAC tournament.
