Newsome Named To The Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American Team

TUCSON, Ariz. – Calvin “CJ” Newsome, a Tiger baseball outfielder” was recently named to the Louisville Slugger’s Freshmen All-American Baseball Team. The 2016 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features a wealth of baseball talent and Newsome was among those selected.

The Colombia, Miss. native maintained a .351 batting average, playing in 56 games with 55 starts. He recorded 211 at-bats with 52 runs, 74 hits (14 doubles, four triples, one home run) for 35 RBIs, 99 total bases, a .469 slugging percentage, and a .417 on base percentage. Newsome stole 20 bases with 26 attempts. On the field, the outfielder tallied 99 putouts with four assist for a .954 fielding percentage.

For his effort during the 2016 season, Newsome was named to the 2016 Southwestern Athletic All-Conference First team and was recognized by College Sports Madness and Black College Nines.

The Jackson State baseball team closed out the season 36-24, ranking second in the SWAC East Division and making it to the semi-final round of the SWAC Championship Tournament.
