Eastern Shore takes next step in program rebuild

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland – When Hawks head coach Brian Hollamon took the helm of the baseball team in 2017, his mission was to install a full program. The next phase begins this weekend as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore opens its season Friday (Feb. 15) at Longwood in Farmville, Virginia.

The series with Longwood will be four games long. Friday will be a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m., followed by single games Saturday (Feb. 16) at noon and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 17). Admission to the games are free at Buddy Bolding Stadium and live stats are available.

“The guys have done a good job all fall and came back prepared in the winter.” Hollamon said. “They are ready to play and Longwood is their first opportunity to show how we’ve changed.”

One part of the full program involved recruiting a full competition roster. With 10 players returning from a season ago, there will be a lot of fresh faces on the diamond this spring. New arrivals are made up of 11 junior college or transfer students and 18 true freshman. Players are mostly from the Mid-Atlantic region.

Returners Hawk fans would recognize include sophomore shortstop Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland), who was second in the conference in fielding assists. Juniors Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) and Marty Tolson (Stafford, Virginia) contributed heavily to the pitching staff, and Marshall hit over .300 at the dish.

“Our new guys have been great.” Hollamon said. “They and the whole them and accepted and bought in. We don’t know if it will equate to wins, but we are going in the right direction.”

The Shore is looking to improve on a 12-41 season in 2018. After sweeping Delaware State in the final Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series to advance to the conference tournament, the season ended after a brief trip to Daytona.

Longwood’s series is the first four of 54 games for this year. After a second road trip to Eastern Kentucky, the Hawks will open at home March 1 against Fordham.
