DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior pitcher Devin Sweet (Greensboro, N.C.) has been a four-year starter for the Eagles, and now stands as the modern-era career leader in wins and strikeouts.

Sweet has notched 17 wins with 219 strikeouts over his career, passing Glenn Frye for the top spot in each category.  Frye finished his career with 12 wins and 214 strikeouts over four years as well.

NCCU baseball head coach Jim Koerner says he’s not surprised by Sweet’s accomplishments, as he’s worked hard to reach this mark.

“Devin has been an impact pitcher for us since he arrived on campus four years ago,” Koerner said.  “It does not surprise me that he has set new standards in wins and strikeouts.  He has worked tremendously hard to improve each year, and has earned everything he’s received.”

Sweet has made 52 appearances and 36 starts during his career for a 17-9 record, and has a 4.16 career ERA, which currently stands as the third-best in the modern era.  He announced his presence in his freshman season in 2015 when he put up a team-best 2.93 ERA, the lowest by an NCCU freshman in the modern-era and the current sixth best in a season at NCCU.

This year, Sweet has a 4-2 record and tossed the first nine-inning complete game since 2012 during a 3-1 win over Savannah State on March 24, when he fired a career-high 12 strikeouts.  He currently leads the MEAC with 60 strikeouts, and averages 10.66 punch outs per nine innings.
