DURHAM, N.C. – Boston Red Sox hero Trot Nixon will be the keynote speaker and Durham Bulls vice president of baseball operations Mike Birling will be the special guest at the ninth annual North Carolina Central University First Pitch Banquet and Silent Auction on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Rickhouse in Durham, North Carolina.
The fundraising event to benefit the NCCU baseball program will begin with a meet-and-greet from 6:00-7:00 p.m., followed by a sit-down dinner. There will also be a silent auction as well as a raffle. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet members of the 2020 NCCU baseball team.
Nixon played 12 seasons in the Major Leagues, including 10 with the Boston Red Sox from 1996 to 2006. Notably, he was a member of the Red Sox’s 2004 World Series champion team that stopped an 86-year championship drought, and came through with a big two-out, two-run double in the clinching game against St. Louis. Over his career, the Wilmington, North Carolina, native played 1,092 games and amassed 995 hits with 555 RBI and 137 home runs, and batted .274.
Birling has been with the Durham Bulls since 1998, and has been named International League Executive of the Year in 2003 and 2015. A native of Kimberly, Wisconsin, Birling began his career with the Bulls in 1998 as the team’s Assistant General Manager before being promoted to GM in December of 2002. Prior to joining the Durham staff, he was General Manager of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A) and was named the Midwest League Executive of the Year in 1998.
For the ninth straight year, local radio legend, avid baseball fan, and Durham Bulls public address announcer Tony Riggsbee will be the emcee for the evening.
Individual tickets for the sit-down dinner and silent auction are $75, while baseball alumni can purchase a ticket for $50.
Table sponsorships are available starting at $1,000, including eight seats and an ad in the program for the event.
A VIP Table Sponsor package is also available, including eight tickets for the sit-down dinner, as well as program recognition, eight complimentary raffle tickets, public address announcements at NCCU home baseball games, signage space availability at the Durham Athletic Park for NCCU home baseball games – all for $2,500.
