GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T baseball held Presbyterian to only two hits while reeling off 14 of their own in an 8-5 midweek victory over the Blue Hose Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium. For the second time this season, junior outfielder Dawnoven Smith finished with three RBI.

“It was a tough ballgame the way the weather was today,” said N.C. A&T coach Ben Hall. “It was cold out, but we tell guys you have to control what you can control. We have to be better defensively, we made that game much closer than it should have been, but it was really good to see our hitters come around a little bit as the game went. We had a couple of big innings by taking some quality at-bats driving in some runs which were good to see today.”

Five Aggies recorded multiple hits paced by Smith. He went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sophomore designated hitter James Rorie had two hits with two RBI, junior catcher Jarrett Norman had two hits, an RBI and a run scored, senior outfielder Greg White finished with two hits and two runs scored while sophomore infielder Zach McLean went 2-for-4 scoring two runs with an RBI.

The Blue Hose took a 4-3 lead going into the Aggies sixth inning. Norman led off the sixth with a double to right-center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Smith. Rorie sent Norman home on a single to right field to tie the score at 4.

In the seventh inning, senior outfielder Myles Sowell singled to left field and then junior infielder A.J. Hunt singled up the middle putting two runners on. McLean hit an RBI single to left scoring Sowell for a 5-4 lead. Norman’s RBI singled went right past the first baseman sending Hunt home with the bases loaded. The final two runs of the inning came on a single up the middle by Smith sending both McLean and White home for an 8-4 lead.

Presbyterian scored one run in the eighth inning as the Aggies held on for the first midweek victory of the season.

The Aggies led early on against the Blue Hose. White led the second inning off with the Aggies second hit of the game singling up the middle. Then Smith RBI doubled to left field scoring White followed by Rorie blasting an RBI double to the gap in deep right-center field returning the favor as Smith crossed home. The Aggies extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning on an RBI single by White past first base scoring McLean.

After the Aggies made a pitching change on the mound in the fourth inning, the Blue Hose took advantage by tying the game with three runs. With the bases loaded a fielding error allowed Glen Casaceli to score PC’s first run. McLaughlin then hit a sacrifice fly to right bringing in Rob Greco and then a bases-loaded walk sent Jonathan White home for the tying score.

N.C. A&T will host St. Bonaventure in an upcoming three-game home series at War Memorial Stadium. The first game is slated for Friday, at 6 p.m. Game 2 is Saturday at 3 p.m., and the final game is Sunday at 1 p.m.
