Nazier McIlwain Homers Twice In Eagles Double Header Sweep At Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Sophomore infielder Nazier McIlwain had six hits, six runs and eight RBIs in a pair of win in a MEAC road double header at Delaware State on Saturday, March 25th at Soldier Field. Coppin State won game one 14-3 and 9-7 in game two.

The Eagles had season-highs in runs scored (14), hits (14), RBIs (12), doubles (4), home runs (2) and total bases (20) at Delaware State in the first game. Coppin State score one run in the first inning, three runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and six in the seventh inning.

Freshman pitcher Quinn Gleed (2-3) walked a season-low three batters in his fourth start of the season. Gleed went 7.0 innings for his second complete game striking out three in the victory.

At the plate, Nazier McIlwain went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a career-high four runs scored. Sophomore DH Jamar Criss had two hits with three RBIs including a double. Junior catcher Brett Helmbrecht also had two hits with two RBIs and his second double of the year. The Eagles stole two bases with junior outfielder Andres Santana and senior infielder Bryant Miranda each tallying one. Freshman infielder Allen Saar recorded a season-high three runs scored, freshman Corey Treyes scored two runs along with Santana.

In the first inning, Criss RBI singled to right center field putting the Eagles ahead 1-0 scoring McIlwain after he doubled to right center field. The Hornets tied it up in the bottom of the first inning, but the Eagles came up with three hits leading to three runs to go back on top in the fifth inning.

Saar led off doubling down the left field line and then scored the first run of the inning on an RBI single by junior outfielder Caleb Duhay. Helmbrecht also doubled down the left field line for an RBI and then a fielding error allowed both Treyes and McIlwain to score extending the CSU advantage to 4-1.

Coppin State then exploded for six runs on five hits in the seventh inning to seal their victory in game one. Miranda led off with a single through the right side then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior infielder John Bonanca. Next, senior outfielder Clinton Arnold blasted an RBI triple to left center field scoring Miranda. Santana’s RBI single to right center brought in Arnold and then McIlwain RBI singled through the left side scoring Saar who reached on a bunt. A bases loaded walk and a hit batter brought in two more runs for the Eagles in a 14-3 conference road victory.

In game two, McIlwain hit two home runs for the first time in his career finishing with five RBIs. Criss added on two hits with Santana, Helmbrecht and Bonanca each recording one hit apiece.

In the first inning, McIlwain homered to right center field giving the Eagles the early 2-0 lead scoring Santana. Delaware State responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. An exciting third inning featured six runs on five hits as Coppin State regained momentum.

Santana singled at the leadoff and advanced to second on a throwing error. McIlwain followed with a home run to right field lifting the Eagles back in to the front. Criss and Helmbrecht both singled to get on base with Criss scoring on a passed ball and Helmbrecht reaching on a sacrifice fly out by Bonanca. A bases loaded walk by Santana allowed Arnold to give the Eagles another run and McIlwain’s RBI single to right center field cored Saar for the sixth run of the inning.

Freshman pitcher Jacob Lewis (2-2) went 3.1 innings striking out four batters in the win and walked only two. Relief pitcher sophomore Krystian Negron (1) picked up the save and added three strikeouts in 3.2 innings tossed with only one earned run.

The teams will play a single game on Sunday, March 25th at noon to conclude the weekend series at Soldier Field.
