MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Zavian Caldwell gave up just one earned run in five innings of work but six errors were the biggest difference in Miles’ 3-2 loss to Auburn-Montgomery Tuesday afternoon at the AUM Baseball Complex.

Brandon Conner provided the big blow on offense, hitting a 2-out, 2-run home run to left, that scored Cody Anderson and brought the Golden Bears (2-1) to within a run in the seventh. Miles had a chance to do more damage in the eighth, putting the first two runners on. But Will CanteyJacob Bisharat, and Peyton Logan could not move the runners along and the Warhawks (3-1) escaped the threat.

Caldwell (0-1) was making his first start for Miles after a dazzling debut out of the bullpen last week against Morehouse. He was still solid on Tuesday, allowing just five hits and striking out six. But his defense continually let him down. In the third, Grayson Blackwell reached on a 1-out error and scored the first run of the game on a groundout. Errors on consecutive plays in the fourth led to a second run. In the fifth, a passed ball and two more errors put another run on the board for AUM.

Todd Burkett pitched five scoreless for the win and Micah Henderson pitched the final two innings to earn the save for AUM. Anderson had two hits and Matthew McDonald pitched three scoreless innings in relief for Miles, which plays a doubleheader at Stillman on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
