Miles third baseman Xavius Burden was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-South Region team, which was released by the organization today.

Burden, a senior from Troy, Ala., was named to the Second Team. He was the only player from Miles that was selected and one of four Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference student-athletes named to the team. Last season, Burden enjoyed a monster campaign, slashing .403/.519/.535 with eight doubles, three home runs, 41 runs batted in and five stolen bases. His batting average was 31st in Division II, his on-base percentage was 11th. He also contributed on the mound, going 3-2 with a save and a 4.10 earned run average in 10 games.

Burden was a First Team All-SIAC selection in 2017 but really pushed his performance into another stratosphere during the SIAC Championship. He hit .473 with seven RBI while also going 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts. He struck out the side in the ninth inning against LeMoyne-Owen to lead the Golden Bears to their first conference tournament title and NCAA postseason berth, earning Most Valuable Player honors during the process.

During his career, Burden is a .333 hitter with four home runs and 94 RBI with more walks (57) than strikeouts (35). He is 11-6 with two saves in 101 2/3 innings pitched.

The Golden Bears did not make the top-10 in the preseason All-Region voting but did make it into the Receiving Votes category, the only SIAC team to earn any votes. Last year, Miles tied a program record with 31 wins and came within four outs of winning its first NCAA Tournament game under first-year head coach Ty Roberts.
