Miles Golden Bears Take Down Montevallo

Miles Sports Information

Zavian Caldwell gave up just one run in five innings, Brandon Conner had three hits and the bullpen was solid over the final four innings as Miles defeated Montevallo 4-1 Wednesday afternoon at historic Rickwood Field.

The Golden Bears (4-2) jumped on the Falcons (2-6) early. The first four hitter reached base, culminating with a run-scoring single from Peyton Logan that plated Destin Davidson. It was more of the same in the second. With one out, the next four hitters reached. Conner’s RBI single scored Ryne Benson (two hits) and a double by Davidson scored Gage Humphries. The last hit made the score 3-0 and chased Montevallo starter Anthony Porter (1-1) after just 10 batters.

Caldwell (1-1) pitched out of some trouble in three of his five innings but only gave up a RBI ground out to Tyler Krabbe in the third. His biggest escape act came in the fourth after he gave up hits on his first two pitches of the frame. He got one of his five strikeouts for the first out, then saw catcher Jacob Bisharat fire a rocket to second to pick off Ben Teel. A ground out to third ended the inning.

Conner would score on a wild pitch for the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Matthew McDonaldallowed three baserunners in his three innings of work to get the game to Will Cantey, who pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

The Golden Bears are back in action on Feb. 19 when they travel to face West Alabama. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
