NORFOLK, Va., – Coppin State junior Justin Banks and North Carolina Central junior Corey Joyce were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State’s Ty Hancheyearned Rookie of the Week honors, while Delaware State junior Garrett Lawson was named Pitcher of the Week.

Banks (6-2, 245, Jr., Fairfield, Calif.) was 10-for-17 (.588) at the plate in four games this past week, leading the Eagles to a 3-1 record and a new school record for wins in a season. He had four RBIs for the week – two each in the second and third games of the Maryland Eastern Shore series – and he scored twice. Banks went 4-for-5 in the second game against the Hawks, and he was 3-for-3 in Sunday’s finale. For the week, Banks had a .765 slugging percentage and .579 on-base percentage.

Joyce (6-1, 190, Jr., Lexington, Ky.) was 11-for-22 (.500) at the plate this past week, driving in five runs and scoring six times. With four doubles, a triple and a home run, Joyce boasted a .909 slugging percentage for the week, and he reached base safely 56 percent of the time. He had a double and a home run against Duke, and he had a double and a triple in the Savannah State series opener. In Sunday’s finale, Joyce was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Hanchey (5-10, 160, Fr., Norfolk, Va.) batted 6-for-10 (.600) in helping the Spartans go 3-2 this past week – including a series win over Delaware State and a win over North Carolina Central. He drove in a pair of runs on the week and had a double, a triple and a stolen base. In the NCCU game, Hanchey went a career-best 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in those two runs. He slugged .900 and boasted a .692 on-base percentage for the week.

Lawson (6-3, 200, Jr., Dover, Del.) threw a complete-game, seven-inning shutout as Delaware State blanked Norfolk State 14-0 on Saturday, scattering three hits – all singles – and striking out seven without giving up a walk in picking up his sixth win of the season.

Matt Day (CSU) went 1-for-2 with a run scored against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Devin Rivera Ozuna (CSU) struck out seven in eight innings of work against Maryland Eastern Shore.

Jared Gillis (DSU) had five RBIs in the Norfolk State series, going 5-for-5 with four driven in on Saturday’s opener.

Scott Meitzler (NCAT) hit a two-run home run on Friday against Bethune-Cookman in just his fourth career at-bat.

Caleb McRoy (NCCU) struck out eight in a combined 4.2 innings of relief work, giving up just two hits and one run.

Ryan Miller (NCCU) had eight strikeouts and gave up just two runs in 7.1 innings against Savannah State.

Jonathan Mahoney (NSU) pitched into the 10th inning on Sunday against Delaware State, striking out six and giving up just two runs.

Jalen Atterbury (SSU) was 3-for-6 with three RBIs and a run scored in the second game of a three-game set against North Carolina Central.
