MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., – Savannah State junior Aaron Straker was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Florida A&M’s Jared Weber earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Delaware State senior Garrett Lawson was named Pitcher of the Week.

Straker (6-1, 185, Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit .545 (6-for-11) for the week, scoring four runs and driving in six as the Tigers took two out of three from defending conference champion North Carolina A&T State. He recorded multiple hits in each of the three games, and he had a double and a home run in the series finale on Sunday – driving in five runs to key the victory. He slugged .649 and had a .452 on-base percentage for the week.

Weber (6-3, 180, Fr., Wakulla, Fla.) was 6-for-17 (.353) in four games for the Rattlers this past week, hitting safely in all four, driving in six runs and scoring twice. He was 3-for-4 in the second game of a three-game set against North Carolina Central, driving in a pair of runs. He also had two RBIs in the series finale against the Eagles, as well as Florida A&M’s midweek contest against Jacksonville.

Lawson (6-3, 200, Sr., Dover, Del.) struck out a career-high 10 batters in 7.1 innings of work against Maryland Eastern Shore, scattering five hits and giving up just one earned run in winning the second game of a three-game series the Hornets swept against their MEAC Northern Division rivals.

Justin Banks (CSU)
 walked seven times – five intentional – and was 4-for-8 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Matt Day (CSU) scored four runs and stole four bases and went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in game two against Norfolk State.

Devin Rivera Ozuna (CSU) tossed a complete game against Norfolk State, striking out six and giving up just two earned runs.

Jeremy Carrow (DSU) tossed six innings of relief against Maryland Eastern Shore, striking out four.

Cole Garey (DSU) had two doubles and a home run in a three-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore, driving in four runs.

Brian Cordell (MDES) had three RBIs, including two in a win over Mount St. Mary’s – a game in which he hit his first career triple.

Marty Tolson (MDES) struck out eight in 6.1 innings against Delaware State, tying his career high.

Michael Johnson (NCAT) tossed five shutout innings against nationally-ranked South Carolina, striking out five.

Jason King (NCAT) was 5-for-9 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, including a walkoff single against Savannah State.

Nick Fajardo (NCCU) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in game two against Florida A&M.

Carter Williams (NCCU) drove in six runs in a three-game sweep of Florida A&M, including a double and a home run.

Justin Hayes (NSU) stole seven bases for the week and scored five times, including three steals each in the first two games against Coppin State.
