Lions Shutout Claflin 2-0, For First Victory of Season

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Freshman Sam Garmoe (Bowie, MD/Bowie HS) picked up his first collegiate win tossing a shutout on the road against Claflin University, 2-0 on Thursday, February 26th. Garmoe allowed four hits while striking out two batters in the victory.

Lincoln produced six hits and a pair of RBIs by juniors Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS) and Charles Gibbons (Brooklyn, NY/Genesee CC). In the first inning, Gibbons doubled scoring junior Terrell Berringer for an early 1-0 advantage. The Lions sealed their first victory of the season in the seventh inning. Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS)’s RBI single scored senior Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) for the Lions second run. Bolden also hit a double to left field in the seventh leading the Lions offense while stealing his first base of the season along with Avery Loma and Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michael Academy).

In his Lions debut, freshman Sam Garmoe (Bowie, MD/Bowie HS) pitched a solid opener. He went 6 2/3 innings striking out two batters. Claflin was held to four hits by the Lions defense. Freshman Crae Watkins (Lorain, OH/Brookside HS) picked up the save striking out the batter leading Lincoln to their first win of the season.

In their second game of the double header, Claflin took a 4-0 lead by the third inning and held on for a 4-1 win. Senior Demetrius Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Murrell Dobbins HS) took the mound and gave up five hits for four runs. Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) pitched in relief and had two strikeouts in three innings of work.

The Lions finally scored in the fourth inning on aggressive base running by sophomore DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS). Parker drew a walk, advanced to second base on an error by the Claflin defense, and then stole third base. Parker was brought home by Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michael Academy)’s RBI groundout. Lincoln failed to produce any more runs and suffered a 4-1 defeat at Mirmow Field to Claflin.

In their double header split, Lincoln found success with their freshman pitchers and aggressive base running. Their overall record improves to 1-2, as they continue their road trip with a trip to Benedict College on Saturday, February 28th.
