Justin Banks Leads Coppin State Baseball To Twinbill Split At Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Justin Banks had a huge day as he went 6-for-10 with two home runs and three RBI as the Coppin State baseball team split a doubleheader at Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at Hayes Stadium. The Eagles won the opener, 9-3, before falling in the nightcap, 7-3.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • Charlotte scored runs in the first and fourth innings off Coppin starting pitcher Jahmon Taylor but the Eagles cut the deficit in half with a run in the sixth as Justin Banks slugged a solo home run to right field.
  • Taylor retired a pair of 49ers in the bottom half of the inning before being replaced by Branden Redfern with runners on first and second.  A single drove in a run and Charlotte took a 3-1 lead.
  • Coppin erupted for six runs on four hits and also took advantage of two 49ers errors to take a 7-3 lead. Carlos Alviarez and Derek Lohr found the gaps for back-to-back doubles and Ryan McWilliams reached on an error which tied the score at three. Following another error and a walk, Marcos Castillo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving CSU a 4-3 advantage.  Erik Crossman extended Coppin’s lead with a two-run single and Alviarez hit another double to score Castillo, rounding out the scoring.
  • Corey Treyes led off the ninth inning with his first collegiate home run and Banks homered for the second time of the game with two outs, increasing the Eagles lead to 9-3.
  • Redfern pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out two, giving Coppin its sixth win of the season.

Inside the Numbers (Game 1)

  • Justin Banks became the first Eagle to hit two home runs in a single game since Nazier McIlwain did so at Delaware State on March 25, 2017.
  • Carlos Alviarez was the other CSU player with a pair of hits while Banks and Erik Crossman had two RBIs apiece.  Alviarez also drew a walk, reaching base safely three times on the day.
  • Corey TreyesDerek Lohr and Corey Treyes all reached safely a couple times each with a hit and a walk.
  • Jahmon Taylor allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four in 5.2 innings but got the no-decision.
  • Branden Redfern improved to 2-1 on the year, allowing just one hit and two walks with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

How it Happened (Game 2)

  • Coppin took an early 1-0 lead as Justin Banks singled in the first inning to drive in Corey Treyes.  Treyes singled to lead off the game and advanced to third on a double by Nazier McIlwain.
  • Devin Rivera Ozuna tossed a 1-2-3 first inning but allowed six runs over the next four innings as Charlotte took a 6-1 lead.
  • McIlwain and Justin Banks walked and singled to start a rally in the sixth before Carlos Alviarez drove in McIlwain with a single, cutting the lead to 6-2.
  • Lucas Richards made his collegiate debut in the bottom half of the frame and tossed a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
  • Matt Day led off the seventh with his first collegiate home run to make it a 6-3 ballgame.  After two outs, Marcos Castillo and Banks had back-to-back singles but the Eagles stranded both.
  • Bradley Tuttle came in for the bottom half of the frame and allowed a run.
  • The Eagles threatened in both the eighth and ninth inning but stranded three runners and took the defeat.
