JSU To Face Savannah State In Non-Conference Action Tuesday

The Jackson State University Tigers baseball team returns to action Tuesday, May 5 to take on the Savannah State Tigers at Tiger Field in Savannah, Ga.

JacksonStateTigersThe Tigers (29-20) dropped a weekend Southwestern Athletic Conference series 2-1 to the Alabama State Hornets. JSU’s only win of the weekend was a 9-5 victory in the second game of the Saturday double-header.

The Tigers (28-18, 14-7) are coming off a non-conference, 14-3 mid-week loss to New Orleans. Senior infielder Melvin Rodriguez leads JSU in hitting with a .439 batting average and is currently ranked number two nationally in that statistical category. He is also fourth in Division I baseball in sacrifice flies and hits. Senior catcher Jovany Felipe leads the Tigers defensively with 286 putouts, 33 assists and a .976 fielding percentage. He is currently batting .321. Freshman infielder Jesus Santana leads the team with 11 home runs.

Savannah State BaseballThe Savannah State Tigers (19-30, 12-12 MEAC) enter the game on a two game winning streak, after taking the final two games of a three-game series against Bethune Cookman University. Zachary Brigham leads the Tigers with a .345 batting average, with 58 hits, 22 runs and 10 doubles. Charles Sikes currently has a .322 batting average. Sikes leads the team in home runs (6). Harrison Moore has a .308 batting average.

The two teams last squared off last season during a three game series (April 4-5) at Braddy Field. JSU took the series 3-0 (W 4-3, W 8-4, W 6-2).
