Jarvis Christian Bulldogs Take Series Opener With Huston-Tillotson 7-3 As Joseph Lyall Sets Strikeout Record

Joseph Lyall pitched a masterful game Friday afternoon, allowing just two hits through the first 8 innings while setting a Bulldog strikeout record ringing up 14 Ks, as the Bulldogs took the RRAC series opener, 7-3.

Huston-Tillotson picked up a run in the first inning on a hit and an error but Lyall allowed only one hit and no runs from that point until the top of the 9th.

In the bottom of the 2nd the Bulldogs picked up three runs. Phillip Jones led off the inning with a triple. Anthony Ortiz flied out to left and Jones scored on Jonas Garcias double to left. Angel Guillensingled moving Jonas Garcia to third. After a Caleb Jones strike out, and a Guillen steal of second, Lawrence Anderson singled to right, driving in Jonas Garcia and Guillen.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Bulldogs added the eventual winning run. Chandler Matthews opened the inning with a double to deep left center and moved to third on a passed ball. After a Bryan Peguero ground out, Phillip Jones singled to center driving in Matthews.

As Lyall continued to baffle Huston-Tillotson batters, the Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the 7th when Jonas Garcia, who had walked, scored when Anderson hit into a fielders choice.

The Bulldogs added insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th. With one out in the inning,Chase Martinez reached on a walk. Phillip Jones was hit by a pitch to move Martinez to second. As Martinez was thrown out trying to steal, Phillip Jones moved to second. After an Anthony Ortiz walk, Jonas Garcia singled to left driving in Phillip JonesAusten Pulcher came in to run for Ortiz and went to third on the Jonas Garcia single. Tyler Ruiz came in to pinch hit for Angel Guillen and walked to load the bases. Armond Barrios came in as a pinch hitter and drew a walk, forcing in Pulcher.

In the top of the night, Lyall ran into a bit of trouble giving up a single and a double, combined with dropped pop up behind second, that led to Huston-Tillotsons last two runs.  Noel Sanchez came on with one away to pick up a strike out and force a fly ball to center to finish the game.

Lyall struck out 14 while walking only two and allowing three runs on four hits to pick up the win.

Offensively, leadoff hitter Lawrence Anderson went 2-for-5 with three rbi. Jonas Garcia went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair as well as scoring two. Phillip Jones went 2-for-3, driving in one and scoring a pair. Chandler Matthews went 2-for-3 and scored a run.

The Bulldogs, now 17-18 on the season and 7-6 in RRAC play,  are back on the diamond at noon on Saturday to wrap up the three game RRAC series with a doubleheader against Huston-Tillotson.
