Hawkins, Texas—-The Jarvis Christian College Bulldogs baseball team closed out their Red River Athletic Conference series against Wiley College at home on Saturday, March 18, 2017. JCC saw a game one victory, backed behind a strong outing from Joseph Lyall (JR/Richmond, TX), by a score of 9-4.


Joseph Lyall retired the side to begin the game, striking out two Wildcat hitters. The Bulldogs would reach base with one out on a Ryan Emerald (SR/Jamestown, CA) single, advancing to second on a balk by the Wiley pitcher, but would be left stranded.

In the second, after a 1-2-3 inning for the Wildcats, the Bulldogs would cross the first run of the game on a sac squeeze by Anthony Ortiz (SO/Bronx, NY) to score CJ Tyler (FR/Van Alstyne, TX). The Wildcats would be shut down again in the third, followed by a 2 RBI single by CJ Tyler to score DeAndre McGuire (SR/Houston, TX) and Ryan Emerald, as JCC would take a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would take a 5-0 lead in the fourth, after a 2 RBI single by Ryan Emerald with two outs. Wiley would load the bases in the top half of the fifth inning, recording their first hit of the ball game after an error by JCC and walk, but would be left stranded after Joseph Lyall struck out the next batter, to keep the Cats off the scoreboard.

JCC added another run in the fifth off a throwing error by the Cats catcher to move the lead to 6-0. WC leadoff hitter would reach first on a walk and advanced to second on a one out single up the middle. The Bulldogs would go through two pitching changes, with Wiley cutting the lead, 6-4, on four hits. In the bottom half, JCC would respond with three runs of their own to secure a 9-4 lead, heading into the last and final inning. Wiley would threaten but relief pitcher, Alejandro Guerrero (JR/San Leandro, CA) would work out of the jam in the win. Joseph Lyall (6-1) secured his 6th win of the season in 5.1 innings of work, while striking out 8.


Wiley would get on the board first in the final game of the series in the second inning, crossing 2 unearned runs on a misplayed grounder by JCC. More damage could have been done prior to the error, but Spencer Thomas (JR/Oakdale, CA) hauled in a deep flyout to left along the fence to prevent a big inning.

CJ Tyler would lead off the bottom half of the inning with a single, followed by a Chandler Matthews (FR/Highland Village, TX) base on balls. JCC would put down a sac bunt at the plate to advance both runners, setting up an RBI single up the middle by Koby Greene (SR/Bullard, TX). Cody Daffron (SO/Prairieville, LA) would tie the ballgame up at 2 with an RBI single to right. In the third, after a 1-2-3 inning for the Wildcats, the Bulldogs would take a 6-2 lead off two hits and one Wiley error.

Emilio Griego (JR/Yuma, AZ), the starter for the Bulldogs, would retire the next nine Wildcat batters before Wiley would get back on the scoreboard in the seventh inning, scoring 2 runs off four hits, stranding runners in scoring position, trimming the JCC lead, 6-4. In the bottom half, JCC would answer back. Wiley would make a call to the bullpen hitting JCCs leadoff hitter Ryan Emerald and surrendering a base hit to Carlos Andrade (SR/Pasadena, TX). A sac bunt would advance the runners setting up a 2 RBI single by Chandler Matthews. Spencer Thomas would drive in the third run of the inning, with Koby Greene laying down a sac squeeze to move the lead to 10-4

Frank Montano (FR/Edinburg, TX) would come into pitch for the Bulldogs in the eighth, keeping Wiley off the scoreboard. Next, the Bulldogs would score four more, with the final hit being a pinch hit RBI by Kyle Deville (FR/Opelousas, LA) to score Austen Pulcher (FR/Baytown, TX), bringing the game to an end via the 10-run rule.


JCC (15-16, RRAC 5-4) will travel to Prairie View, Texas, to take on NCAA Division I Prairie View A&M University (4-18, SWAC 1-3) in a non-conference double-header on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm. JCC has dropped their last four contests against the Panthers in recent meetings since 2011. JCC is 2-4 overall in the matchup since 2010.
