Hawkins, Texas – Baseball closed out their three game conference series with the University of the Southwest at home in Hawkins, on Friday, April 21, 2017. The Bulldogs completed the sweep of the Mustangs backed by strong pitching performances by JCC and timely hitting.

GAME TWOBulldogs 5, Mustangs 3, 11 innings

JCC starter, Alejandro Guerrero (6-2-1) | USW starter, Alex Goodman (6-3)

Southwest would get on the board first to begin play Saturday in a pitching battle, scoring one unearned run on one hit and one error. Carlos Andrade (SR/Pasadena, TX) would double off the wall in right in the bottom half but would be left stranded. USW would go on to add another run in the 3rd following a two out error by the Bulldogs. JCC would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning following two USW errors that would score Ryan Emerald (SR/Jamestown, CA).

The combination of Anthony Ortiz (SO/Bronx, NY) and Alejandro Guerrero (JR/San Leandro, CA) would prevent Southwest from scoring in the 4th with Ortiz tossing the runner out at third and Guerrero striking out the next batter for the third out. USW would single in their third run of the ballgame in the 5th to go ahead 3-1. The Bulldogs would tie the game up 3-3 in the 6th after an error on am attempted pick off at first to score Santos Abreu (JR/Brooklyn, NY), followed by a pinch hit sac fly by Kevin Ciprian (SO/Providence, RI) to score Austen Pulcher (FR/Baytown, TX). After a scoreless 7th and final inning, we would go extras all tied up.

As the game would go into the 10th, DeAndre McGuire (SR/Houston, TX) would lead off with an infield hit to third. After failing to advance McGuire on a sac bunt attempt, McGuire would take second on a steal as USW would intentionally walk Andrade. Santos Abreu narrowly missed a walk off homerun, as the Southwest right fielder would haul in the catch at the fence, advancing McGuire to third. JCC had a chance but was narrowly thrown out at first after a bobble to record the 3rd out of the inning. In the 11th, Tyler Arnsberg (JR/Merced, CA) would come into pitch.

After a 1-2-3 inning for Arnsberg, Angel Guillen (JR/Santa Maria, CA) would walk-off in homerun fashion after a Koby Greene (SR/Bullard, TX) single, as JCC would take game two by a score of 3-5. Arnsberg would pick up the win.

GAME THREEBulldogs 3, Mustangs 1

JCC starter, Matt Burrows (JR/Manteca, CA) (3-2-1) | USW starter, Marvin Galazara (6-3)

Santos Abreu would get things going for JCC in the 1st with an RBI single to right to score Ryan Emerald to go ahead, 0-1. After a scoreless 2nd and 3rd inning, Kevin Ciprian would get the Bulldogs back on the board with a blast over the left field fence as JCC would take a 0-2 lead.

USW would have their leadoff hitter reach base in the 6th but would be thrown out by Kevin Ciprian at second. Runners would reach the corners with two outs and cross their first run of the game on a JCC error. In the bottom half USW would see a pitching change as JCC would load the bases with 1 out. Ryan Emerald would follow with a sac squeeze to score Jonathan Lewis (FR/Longview, TX) as JCC would carry a 1-3 lead into the 7th and final inning.

Southwest would have runners at corners but Matt Burrows and the Bulldogs defense would not give, as JCC took the series finale and completed the sweep, 1-3.
