Jackson State’s Carlos Diaz Inks Contract With Chicago Cubs

Jackson State’s All-SWAC catcher Carlos Diaz signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs organization, Tigers coach Omar Johnson confirmed Wednesday.

Diaz hit .409 with six home runs and 57 RBIs in 2016. He finished in the top 10 in the SWAC in the following categories: batting average (.409), slugging percentage (.620), on-base percentage (.465), runs (50), hits (70), RBIs (57), doubles (14) and total bases (106).

Johnson described Diaz as a “free swinger” during the season, but the junior catcher struck out only 16 times in 171 plate appearances.

After the regular season ended, Diaz was named to the All-SWAC second team. He was not selected in June’s MLB draft.

Diaz originally attended Miami after high school before he transferred to Palm Beach State and eventually landed at JSU.

David Burke will be one of a few candidates who will try to fill the void for the Tigers at catcher next season.
