Jackson State Hosts Southern Illinois Friday In Season-Opener

JACKSON, Miss. – The 2020 version of the Jackson State baseball team makes its much-anticipated debut Friday evening as it begins a four-game series versus Southern Illinois. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Braddy Field.

The two teams are set for a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. However, the schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions.

The Tigers return plenty of talent from the 2019 team, which won 15 games in a row and at one point was the longest winning streak in the country.

JSU has received plenty of attention national preseason awards.

Nikelle Galatas was recognized as the SWAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year after finishing the 2019 campaign ranked seventh in the conference in earned run average (4.13 ERA), fifth in opposing batter average (.237), first in innings pitched (93.2), second in batters struck out (74), and fourth in total wins (6).

The first team was represented well by Jackson State as Jaylyn Williams was selected as the first team all-conference third baseman, Wesley Reyes at shortstop, Equon Smith in the outfield and Chris Prentiss as the designated hitter.

Galatas and Mario Lopez were each named to the second team with Galatas being named as a starting pitcher and Lopez as a reliever.

Perfect Game, a highly-regarded college baseball publication released its 2020 SWAC Preseason Team and it includes four Tigers.

Reyes was selected as shortstop, Williams at third base, Smith at outfielder, and Galatas rounded out the group at starting pitcher.

Division1baseball.com also picked the Tigers as its favorite to win the SWAC championship and represent the conference in the NCAA tournament.
