BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After a big week of Southwestern Athletic Conference action, four student-athletes earned weekly baseball awards.  Alabama State University’s Cesar Rivera (Loiza, P.R./Bethune-Cookman) and Jackson State University’s Melvin Rodriguez (Manati, P.R.) were named co-players of the week.  Dion Holbrook (Arlington, Texas/Mountain View CC) from Grambling State University and Southern University’s Santos Saldivar (Pasadena, Texas/Sam Rayburn) earned co-pitcher of the honors.

Co-Player of the Week – Cesar Rivera (Alabama State)

This is the second consecutive time Rivera has earned the honor, third of the season.  He hit .529 with six runs scored, one double, and one home run with five RBI as the Hornets won all four games last week.  Rivera extended his overall hit streak to 20 games after posting three multi-hit games.

Co-Player of the Week – Melvin Rodriguez (Jackson State)

Rodriguez helped lead the Tigers to a 4-1 record over the week.  He posted a .667 batting average, recording 12 hits in 18 at bats, including a pair of home runs.  He finished with six runs, seven RBI and zero strikeouts.

Norfolk State Baseball: Hemmerich, Mauricio Earn Weekly MEAC Awards

NORFOLK, Va. The red-hot Norfolk State baseball team continued to pile up the conference accolades Monday, as sophomore left hander Devin Hemmerich was named MEAC Pitcher of the Week and shortstop Alex Mauricio was tabbed MEAC Rookie of the Week, the conference announced.

Hemmerich tossed his first collegiate complete-game shutout on Saturday as the Spartans beat Coppin State 8-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. Hemmerich went all seven innings and allowed just two hits, both of the infield variety. Hemmerich walked just one batter and fanned eight in his third complete game of the season. Hemmerich is now 3-2 with a 3.21 ERA this year for NSU, which has won a school Division I record 12 consecutive games.

Hemmerich’s award means that NSU hurlers have now won four of the last five MEAC Pitcher of the Week honors and three in a row. Matt Outman has won twice previously (March 23, April 6) and Stephen Butt once (April 13).

Mauricio earned his second MEAC Rookie of the Week award. The freshman shortstop went 5-for-12 (.417) in the three-game sweep of the Eagles. He stole three bases, scored two runs and drove in two during the weekend and played errorless ball at shortstop. Mauricio is one of three Spartans to win the conference’s weekly rookie honor this season, along with teammates Syeed Mahdi and Roger Hall.
