Rodriguez helped lead the Tigers to a 4-1 record over the week.  He posted a .667 batting average, recording 12 hits in 18 at bats, including a pair of home runs.  He finished with six runs, seven RBI and zero strikeouts.

This is Saldivar’s second weekly honor.  He struck out a league-best 16 batters, to help Southern defeat west division leader Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4-3.  Saldivar went a complete nine innings holding the Golden Lions to a .129 batting average.

Norfolk State Baseball: Hemmerich, Mauricio Earn Weekly MEAC Awards

NORFOLK, Va. The red-hot Norfolk State baseball team continued to pile up the conference accolades Monday, as sophomore left hander Devin Hemmerich was named MEAC Pitcher of the Week and shortstop Alex Mauricio was tabbed MEAC Rookie of the Week, the conference announced.

Hemmerich tossed his first collegiate complete-game shutout on Saturday as the Spartans beat Coppin State 8-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. Hemmerich went all seven innings and allowed just two hits, both of the infield variety. Hemmerich walked just one batter and fanned eight in his third complete game of the season. Hemmerich is now 3-2 with a 3.21 ERA this year for NSU, which has won a school Division I record 12 consecutive games.

Hemmerich’s award means that NSU hurlers have now won four of the last five MEAC Pitcher of the Week honors and three in a row. Matt Outman has won twice previously (March 23, April 6) and Stephen Butt once (April 13).

Mauricio earned his second MEAC Rookie of the Week award. The freshman shortstop went 5-for-12 (.417) in the three-game sweep of the Eagles. He stole three bases, scored two runs and drove in two during the weekend and played errorless ball at shortstop. Mauricio is one of three Spartans to win the conference’s weekly rookie honor this season, along with teammates Syeed Mahdi and Roger Hall.
