Harris Stowe State Steven Wells Fans 14 In 2-0 Loss

TYLER, Tx – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team kicked off their 2019 campaign tonight as they traveled to Tyler, Texas, to take on Texas College in a nonconference matchup. The Hornets, who finished last season with a 30-24 record, were defeated by the Steers by a final score of 2-0 to fall to 0-1 on the season.

Harris-Stowe came out in the first few innings of play and shut down the Steers early as Stephen Wells(SR/Orlando, FL) struck out five batters in the first two innings of the game. Texas College picked it up as the game progressed and were able to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the third to give them a 1-0 lead. The Hornets struggled at the plate over the next few frames and a second run from the Steers in the bottom of the sixth put them up 2-0 in the contest. The Hornets tried their best to get back into the game but could not get the bats rolling as the Steers closed them out down the stretch to hand Harris-Stowe their first loss of the season.

Stephen Wells (0-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed just seven hits and one earned run while striking out a career high 14 batters in seven innings pitched. Dajuan Griffin (SO/Saint Louis, MO) (0-0) came into relieve Wells and struck out one batter while not allowing a hit in one inning on the mound. Chase Goldwater(SR/Grandview, TX) led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with two singles. In addition to Goldwater, Jake Benolken (JR), Cole Danielson (SR/Palm Springs, CA), Dede Cole (JR/Pontiac, MI), and Colton Anderson(JR/Imperial, MO) all had one hit in the contest.

The Hornets will be back on the diamond tomorrow, February 1st when they travel to Hawkins, Texas, to take on the Jarvis Christian College Bulldogs in a nonconference matchup. Harris-Stowe will play a doubleheader with the first game starting at noon and the second game to follow.
