HAWKINS, TX – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Hawkins, Texas, to take on the Jarvis Christian College Bulldogs in a nonconference doubleheader. The Hornets were able to split the series with the Bulldogs as they lost the first game by a final score of 10-5 and then bounced back to win the second game by a final score of 5-4 to improve to 1-2 on the season.
The Bulldogs came out in the first game and scored four runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 8-0 lead. The Hornets bounced back and scored two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the score to 8-2, but another run from the Bulldogs in the bottom half of the inning gave them a 9-2 lead heading into the fifth. Harris-Stowe continued to battle as the game progressed and a homerun from Myles Ivory (JR/Ypsilanti, MI) in the top of the fifth, followed by two runs in the top of the sixth, cut the Bulldogs lead to 9-5 late in the game. Jarvis Christian scored one final run in the bottom of the sixth and then picked the final outs of the game to hand the Hornets their second straight loss.
Chase Goldwater (SR/Grandview, TX) (0-1) got the start in this one as he allowed one earned run and four hits while striking out two in 1.2 innings on the mound. Drew Sigman (JR/Imperial, MO) (0-0) and Brian Myers(SO/Wentzville, MO) (0-0) came into relieve Goldwater as the two combined to allow one earned run and two hits while striking out one in the final 4.1 innings of the game. Myles Ivory led the way for the Hornets at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with a homerun and an RBI. To go along Ivory, Colton Anderson (JR/Imperial, MO), CJ Cleary Jr.(FR/Jonesboro, AR), and Will Biggs III (SO/Campbell, MO) all had an RBI in the contest.
It was a pitching dual to start the second game as neither side was able to get anything going offensively through the first few innings of play. The Hornets were able to get on the board first following a two-run homerun from Colton Anderson in the top of the fourth and held a 2-0 advantage midway through the contest. The Bulldogs answered by scoring a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning but a three-run rally from the Hornets in the top of the sixth gave them a 5-1 lead heading into the final frame. The Bulldogs did their best to get back into the contest and were able to cut the score to 5-4 in the bottom half of the seventh, but that was as close as they would get as Harris-Stowe was able to pick up the final outs of the game to solidify their first win of the season.
Jamie Roustio (FR/Granite City, IL) (1-0) was the starting pitcher for the Hornets in this one as he allowed six hits and one earned run in 3.1 innings on the mound. Dajuan Griffin (SO/Saint Louis, MO) and Tyler Cox(JR/Mississauga, ON) came in to relieve Rustio as the two combined to allow just two hits and one earned run in 3.2 innings pitched. Colton Anderson led the way at the plate as he went 1-2 with a two-run homerun and two runs scored. In addition, Chase Goldwater and Dede Cole (JR/Pontiac, MI) each added RBI’s to round out the top offensive contributors for the Hornets.
