HANNIBAL, MO – The baseball team got back on the winning track today with a 7-4 win over the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University.
Eddie McDaniels (JR/Lebanon, TN) went 3-4 on the day while Tony Montano (SR/San Jose, CA), Kenny Lara(JR/Queens, NY), Jared Corbett (SR/St. Louis, MO), Greg Carter (SR/Inglewood,CA), and Brendan Claus(SO/Wentzville, MO) all picked up hits as well.
The Hornets kicked things off in the top of the 1st after Montano singled through the hole at second base and brought McDaniels home.
Montano would drive in his second run of the day in the top of the 2nd after a ground out to third brought Claus across the plate to make it a 2-0 lead.
McDaniels and Montano would make more noise in the top of the 4th with back-to-back hits to bring Kyel Alexander (FR/Chicago, IL) and Claus home. Kenny Lara would drive in McDaniels with a sac fly to center field while Montano slid home after an error committed by the Trojans.
Harris-Stowe kept HLGU scoreless through 7 innings. The Trojans scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th to cut HSSU’s lead to 6-2.
The Hornets came back in the top of the 9th inning with another run; Greg Carter singled to left field and drove Alexander home to extend their lead to 7-3.
Hannibal-LaGrange attempted a comeback in the bottom of the 9th inning. Todd Wilcoxon and Edwin Betancourt scored on a single through the hole at short to cut their deficit to 7-4. But, the Hornets held on for the win.
Alec Hutt (JR/Las Vegas, NV) got the start and the win for today going 7.0 innings and striking out 13 batters. Bailey Owen (SR/San Jose, CA) and Nick Ferraro (SR/Kansas City, MO) both picthed 1.0 inning while allowing 2 hits, each.
With the win, Harris-Stowe moves to 13-7 overall and 6-2 in AMC play. They will be back in action next week when they face Avila University on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Car Shield Field.
