OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to take on the Mid-America Christian University Evangels in a nonconference doubleheader. The Hornets were able to sweep the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 2-0 and then bounced back to take the second game by a final score of 5-4 to improve to 3-6 on the season.
In the first game of the doubleheader, both sides came out and had a tough time getting anything going offensively as both pitchers were dealing early. The Hornets were finally able to break into the scoring column in the top of the third after Chase Goldwater (SR/Grandview, TX) was able to score on a wild pitch to give Harris-Stowe a 1-0 lead. The Hornets added a second run in the top of the fourth and closed out the Evangels down the stretch to solidify their second win of the season.
Dajuan Griffin (SO/Saint Louis, MO) (1-1) was on the mound for Harris-Stowe in this one as he allowed just five hits while striking out five in his first complete game shutout of the season. Dede Cole (JR/Pontiac, MI) and Zeke Arthur (FR/Rolla, MO) led the way at the plate as Cole went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Arthur went 2-for-3. Houston Himes (SO/Saint Louis, MO) and Chase Goldwater scored the only two runs of the game.
The Hornets carried over their momentum from the first game into the second game and were able to score an early run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. However, their lead did not last long as the Evangels battled back in the bottom half of the frame and rallied for two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the contest. Harris-Stowe was able to tie the game at two after a solo shot from Jake Benolken (JR) in the top of the third but another run from the Evangels in the bottom half of the inning put them up 3-2 heading into the fourth. Harris-Stowe continued to put the ball in the play in the top of the fourth and rallied for three runs to take a 5-3 lead in the game. The Evangels battled back and were able to score a run in the bottom of the sixth but that was as close as they would get as the Hornets picked up the final outs to solidify the two-game sweep.
Tyler Cox (JR/Mississauga, ON) (0-0) got the start in this one as he allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out one in 3.1 innings on the mound. Brian Myers (SO/Wentzville, MO) (1-1) and Michael Washington (FR/St. Louis, MO) (0-0) came in to relieve Cox as the two combined to allow four hits and one earned run while striking out one over the next 2.1 innings. Drew Sigman (JR/Imperial, MO) (0-0) came in to close out the game and picked up his first save of the season. Jake Benolken led the way for the Hornets at the plate as he went 3-for-4, including a solo homerun, with three RBI’s and three runs scored. In addition to Benolken, Maurice Lafon (FR/Albuquerque, NM) went 2-for-3 with a run scored, Dede Cole went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Nick Roepken (SR/Lynbrook, NY) went 1-for-4 with an RBI to round out the top performers for Harris-Stowe.
