O’FALLON, MO – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon as they played host to the 15th ranked Lyon College Scots in an AMC doubleheader. The Hornets were able to win both games of the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 6-2 and the second game by a final score of 4-3 to improve to 20-24 on the season and 13-13 in the AMC.

Today was senior day for the baseball team and prior to the start of the second game the team honored the four seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program.

In the first game of the day, the Hornets put together eight hits in the win. The Scots got off a quick start in this one as they scored an early run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered back by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first and two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead in the game. The Scots scored a run in the top of the sixth to cut the score to the 5-2 but a final run from the Hornets in the bottom of the sixth solidified the win for Harris-Stowe.

Stephen Wells (SR/Orlando, FL) (6-6) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed nine hits and two earned runs while striking out six in his sixth complete game of the season. Today’s win marked the 20th win in Wells career. Dede Cole (JR/Pontiac, MI) led the way at the plate for the Hornets as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s and a run scored. In addition, Cole Danielson (SR/Palm Springs, CA) went 1-for-4 with a two run homerun, Alex Williams(FR/St. Louis, MO) went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Zeke Arthur (FR/Rolla, MO) went 2-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for Harris-Stowe.

In the second game of the day, the Hornets put together nine hits in the win. They got off to a great start in the contest as they rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. The Scots answered back with a run in the third and run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-2, but a homerun from Brendan Claus(JR/Wentzville, MO) in the bottom of the sixth gave Harris-Stowe a 4-2 advantage. The Scots were able to score a final run in the top of the eighth but that was as close as they would get as the Hornets picked up the final outs of the game to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Dajuan Griffin (SO/Saint Louis, MO) (4-3) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out three in 7.2 innings of work. Alex Williams (0-0) came in to relieve Griffin as he picked up his second save of the season after retiring the final four batters of the game. Brendan Claus and Cole Danielson led the way at the plate as they both hit homeruns in the contest.

The baseball team is back in action on Thursday, April 25th when they travel to Henderson, Tennessee, to take on the seventh ranked Freed-Hardeman University Lions in an AMC doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 4 p.m. with the second game to follow.
