PARKVILLE, MO – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Parkville, Missouri, to take on the Park University Pirates in an AMC doubleheader. The Hornets were able to split the doubleheader with the Pirates as they fell in the first game by a final score of 11-10 and then bounced back to take the second game by a final score of 6-5 to improve to 17-23 on the season and 10-12 in the AMC.

In the first game of the day, the Hornets were able to put together 12 hits but were plagued by errors as they had five in the contest. They were able to get off to a fast start in the game as they scored two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Pirates had a tough time getting anything going through the first couple of innings but were able to rally for five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead in the contest. The teams both exchanged four runs in the fourth to make the score 9-8, but a 10th run from the Pirates in the bottom of the fifth gave them a 10-8 advantage late in the game. Despite being down, Harris-Stowe continued to battle and were able to score one run in the top of the sixth and one run in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 10. However, Park was able to bring a run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh to solidify the win and hand the Hornets their fifth straight loss.

Tyler Cox (JR/Mississauga, ON) (4-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed 11 hits and no earned runs in 3.0 innings on the mound. Drew Sigman (JR/Imperial, MO) (3-5) came in to relieve Cox as he allowed seven hits and five earned runs in the final three innings of the contest. Alex Williams (FR/St. Louis, MO) led the way for the Hornets at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI’s. In addition, Dede Cole (JR/Pontiac, MI) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored, Cole Danielson (SR/Palm Springs, CA) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, Caleb Hill(SO/Saint Louis, MO) went 1-for-4 with two RBI’s, Davie Pound (FR/Rolla, MO) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Nick Roepken (SR/Lynbrook, NY) went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Brendan Claus (JR/Wentzville, MO)e had two RBI’s to round out the top performers for Harris-Stowe.

In the second game of the day, the Hornets put together nine hits in the win. The Pirates got off to a quick start in this one as they scored one run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Hornets struggled to get anything going through the first five innings of play but were able to rally for three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 advantage in the contest. Park battled back and were able to tie the score at three in the bottom of the seventh, and then both teams exchanged two runs in the eighth to make the score 5-5 heading into the final frame. The Hornets were able to pick up one final run in the ninth and close out the Pirates to even the series at one.

Stephen Wells (SR/Orlando, FL) (5-6) was on the mound in this one as he allowed just eight hits and two earned runs while striking out seven in his fifth complete game of the season. Davie Pound led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-5 with a solo homerun and two RBI’s. To go along with Pound, Cole DanielsonNick RoepkenDaniel Youngblood (SO/Belleville, IL), and Zeke Arthur (FR/Rolla, MO) all added RBI’s in the contest.

The baseball team is back in action tomorrow, April 13th when they play the final game of the three game series against the Pirates. The game is set to start at noon in Parkville.
