Harris Stowe State Sports Information
ST. LOUIS, MO – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in and AMC matchup. The Hornets, who were coming off a three game sweep over William Woods University, were able to carry over their momentum into today as they defeated the Spartans by a final score of 18-13 to improve to 12-11 on the season and 5-2 in the AMC.
Harris-Stowe was swinging the bat well today as they put together 16 hits, including five homeruns, to solidify their fourth straight win. They got off to a quick start as they were able to score two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. The Spartans battled back and answered with a five run rally in the top of the second, but a three run spot from the Hornets in the bottom half of the frame tied the score at five heading into the third. The Spartans retook the lead over the next two innings after scoring one run in the third and one run in the fourth, but another run from the Hornets in the bottom of the fourth cut the Spartans lead to 7-6 heading into the fifth. Harris-Stowe was able to tie the score at seven in the bottom of the sixth, but a four run rally from the Spartans in the top of the seventh gave them an 11-7 lead late in the game. Despite being down, the Hornets continued to battle and rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 14-11 advantage. The Spartans answered back with two runs in to top of the eighth to cut the lead to one, but another rally from the Hornets in the bottom of the eighth clinched the win.
Dajuan Griffin (SO/Saint Louis, MO) (2-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed two hits and four earned runs in 2.0 innings on the mound. Jamie Roustio (FR/Granite City, IL) (1-0), Michael Washington (FR/St. Louis, MO) (1-0), Drew Sigman (JR/Imperial, MO) (2-1), and Tyler Cox (JR/Mississauga, ON) (3-0) all came in to relieve Griffin as the four combined to allow seven hits and seven earned runs in the final seven innings of the game. Sigman picked up the win and Cox recorded the save (1).
Chase Goldwater (SR/Grandview, TX) had himself a day at the plate as he went 3-for-5 with three homeruns, seven RBI’s, and four runs scored. In addition, Jake Benolken (JR) went 4-for-4 with four RBI’s, Nick Roepken(SR/Lynbrook, NY) went 3-for-4 with a three-run homerun, and Dede Cole (JR/Pontiac, MI) went 1-for-5 with a three run blast to round out the top offensive players for the Hornets.
The baseball team is back in action on Friday, March 15th when they play host to the Central Baptist College Mustangs in an AMC matchup. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Stars Park.
