ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the American Midwest Conference announced the 2020 AMC Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll. After ending last season with a 20-30 overall record and a 13-17 mark in the AMC, the Hornets have been picked to finish sixth out of 10 conference teams.

The Hornets kicked off their 2019-20 campaign in the fall, going 6-2 through two four-game series. They were led by Davie Pound (SO/Rolla, Mo.) and Matt Janocik (SR) through those first eight games as both players finished the fall season with three homeruns and 13 RBI’s. The team also picked up great outings on the mound from Arcentae Stone (JR) and Dajuan Griffin (JR/St. Louis, Mo.) as Stone went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA and Griffin went 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA.

The team will look to carry over that momentum from the fall into the spring as they kick off their spring season this weekend with a three-game set against the William Penn (Iowa) University Statesmen. The team returns numerous pieces from last year’s squad including Davie PoundDede Cole (SR/Pontiac, Mich.), and Alex Williams (SO/St. Louis, Mo.) who all played significant time a season ago. Pound will look to carry the offense in his sophomore year as he finished last season with a .277 batting average while recording 28 RBI’s, seven homeruns, and nine doubles. Cole will look to hold down the shortstop position this season as he started 47 games last year accumulating a .333 batting average while driving in 25 runs, hitting five homeruns, and collecting three triples. Williams played most of his time at third base last season but also pitched a little bit as he finished the year with a .194 batting average and a 2.45 earned run average.

The Hornets will also return Tyler Cox (SR/Mississauga, Ontario), Dajuan Griffin, and Drew Sigman (SR/Imperial, Mo.) on the mound as the three combined to pitch 204.1 innings last season. Cox finished last year logging 83.2 innings while recording a 4.63 ERA and 33 strikeouts. Griffin logged 73.2 innings last season and finished the year with a 5.50 ERA and 45 strikeouts. Sigman came out of the bullpen for 47.0 innings last season and finished the year with a 5.94 ERA and 30 strikeouts.

In addition to the returners, the team will also have several new faces on the team this season. Bay To (JR/Philadelphia, Pa.), Logan Dryden (JR/Witchita, Kan.), and Antonio Dominguez (JR/Rock Island, Ill.) will play significant time this season on the field as all three will look to carry over their success from junior college into this season. Bay To comes to Harris-Stowe State University from Prince George’s (Md.) Community College where he played in 36 games racking up a .375 average with 11 homeruns, 40 RBI’s, 39 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases in 2018. Logan Dryden comes to Harris-Stowe from Highland (Ill.) Community College where he appeared in 39 games and posted a .322 batting average, 18 RBI’s, 28 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases last season. Antonio Dominguez comes to Harris-Stowe from Carl Sandberg College where he hit .276 with a homerun and eight RBI’s last season.

With the hitters come several new pitchers as well including Arcentae Stone and Deven Shulstad (SO). Stone comes to Harris-Stowe from Maryville (Mo.) University where he logged 53.0 innings in 2018 with a 4-1 record, a 4.92 ERA, and 42 strikeouts. Shulstad comes to Harris-Stowe from Florida A&M University where he logged 21.0 innings in 24 appearances out of the bullpen in 2018. He finished the year with a 1-0 record while posting a 3.43 ERA and 14 strikeouts.

The Hornets will resume their season this Friday, January 31st, when they play host to the William Penn (Iowa) University Statesmen in the first game of a three game series. The game is set to start at 2 p.m. at O’Fallon Family Sports Park in O’Fallon, Illinois.
