Harris Stowe State Hornets Defeat Owls In First Game of Series

ST. LOUIS, MO – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the William Woods University Owls in an AMC matchup. The Hornets were able to defeat the Owls by a final score of 5-4 to improve to 9-11 on the season and 2-2 in AMC play.

Harris-Stowe was able to put together eight hits in the contest to solidify their ninth win of the season. The Owls got off to a quick start in this one as they opened up the game with a leadoff homerun to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets bounced back in the bottom half of the frame and rallied for three runs to take a 3-1 lead into the second. The Owls tied the game in the top of the third but a two run rally from Harris-Stowe in the bottom of the sixth gave them a 5-3 advantage. The Owls did their best to get back into the game but the Hornets were able to pick up the final outs to take the first game of the series.

Dajuan Griffin (SO/Saint Louis, MO) (2-2) was on the mound for this one as he allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four batters in his second complete game of the season. Caleb Hill (SO/Saint Louis, MO) and Jake Benolken (JR) led the way at the plate as both went 1-for-1 with two RBI’s.

The Hornets are back in action tomorrow, March 8th when they play the final two games of the three game series against the Owls. The doubleheader is set to start at 3 p.m. at CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Missouri.
