O’FALLON, MO – This afternoon the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets were back in action when they played host to the William Woods University Owls in the final two games of the three-game series. The Hornets, who defeated the Owls in the first game of the series on Thursday, were able to complete the three-game sweep after defeating the Owls in the first game by a final score of 2-0 and in the second game by a final score of 6-4. With the doubleheader sweep, the Hornets have improved to 11-11 on the year and 4-2 in AMC play.

In the first game of the day, the Hornets were able to put together six hits in the 2-0 win. They scored one run in the bottom of the second and one run in the bottom of the third to take an early lead. They held off the Owls down the stretch and were able to pick up their 10th win of the season.

Tyler Cox (JR/Mississauga, ON) (3-0) pitched a gem in this one as he allowed just two hits while striking out three batters in his first complete game shutout of the season. Offensively, Jake Benolken (JR) led the way going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Myles Ivory (JR/Ypsilanti, MI) had the lone RBI in the contest.

In the second game of the day, the Hornets were able to put together eight hits in the 6-4 win. William Woods got off to a quick start in this one as they scored one run in the first and one run in the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Harris-Stowe battled back in the third and were able to use a four run rally to take a 4-2 lead in the game. They were able to add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 6-2 but two runs in the top of the eighth from the Owls cut the lead to 6-4 late in the game. The Owls threatened in the ninth but could not bring runs across as the Hornets picked up the final outs to complete the three-game sweep.

Stephen Wells (SR/Orlando, FL) (2-4) was on the mound in this one as he allowed nine hits and three earned runs while striking out three in 8.0 innings of work. Drew Sigman (JR/Imperial, MO) (1-1) came in to close out the game in the ninth and picked up his second save of the season. Jake Benolken and Nick Roepken (SR/Lynbrook, NY) led the way at the plate as both hit two-run homeruns in the contest.

The baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, March 12th when they travel to Missouri Baptist University to take on the Spartans in an AMC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
