OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Harris-Stowe State University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played the final two games of a four-game series against the Mid-America Christian University Evangels. The Hornets, who won both games against the Evangels in a doubleheader yesterday, were able to complete the weekend sweep as they defeated the Evangels by a final score of 6-4 in the first game and 6-4 in the second game to improve to 5-6 on the season.

Harris-Stowe came out in the first game of the doubleheader and got off to a quick start in the game as they scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. The Evangels bounced back and were able to cut the score in half in the bottom of the frame but another two-run rally from the Hornets in the top of the third gave them a 4-1 lead in the contest. The Evangels answered by scoring one run in the third and two runs in the fourth to tie the game at four, but another two-run rally from Harris-Stowe in the top of the sixth solidified their third straight win.

Stephen Wells (SR/Orlando, FL) (1-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed eight hits and two earned runs while fanning eight batters in his third complete game of the season. Nick Roepken (SR/Lynbrook, NY) led the way offensively as he went 1-for-4 with two RBI’s. In addition to Roepken, Dede Cole (JR/Pontiac, MI) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Cole Danielson (SR/Palm Springs, CA) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Zeke Arthur (FR/Rolla, MO) went 1-for-3 with an RBI to round out the top performers for the Hornets.

Harris-Stowe got off to another quick start in the second game as they rallied for three runs in the top of the first, including a two-run homerun from Jake Benolken (JR), to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. They continued to put the ball in play over the next couple of innings and were able to add a fourth run in the top of the third to put themselves of 4-0 heading into the fourth. The Evangels picked it up in the fourth and were able to cut the lead in half as they rallied for two runs to make the score 4-2. The teams exchanged runs in both the fifth and seventh innings, but the Hornets were able to pick up the final outs of the game to capture the four-game sweep.

Drew Sigman (JR/Imperial, MO) (1-0) was the starter in this one as he allowed nine hits and four earned runs while striking out three in six innings of work. Brian Myers (SO/Wentzville, MO) came in to relieve Sigman and picked up the save as he clinched the final three outs of the game. Jake Benolken led the way offensively as he went 1-for-3 with a two-run homerun. To go along with Benolken, Caleb Hill (SO/Saint Louis, MO) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Nick Roepken went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Brendan Claus (JR/Wentzville, MO) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Maurice Lafon (FR/Albuquerque, NM) went 1-for-2 with an RBI to round out the top performers for Harris-Stowe.

The baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, February 19th when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to take on the Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
